Learning Design and Technology

Throughout my degree-seeking journey in the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) Master of Science in Learning Design and Technology program, I created serval different artifacts ranging from storyboards to design documents to actual learning modules. Some of the artifacts I developed over the three-year period are highlighted below.  I also describe my mastery of the learning design competencies to further demonstrate my capabilities.

My Learning Design Philosophy

My learning design philosophy is simply to help others grow and learn. I will leverage the knowledge I acquired to help design training courses to meet students where they are. I will employ the learning theories, design models, and predictive analytics to help determine the best place to start in the learning process.

UMGC Capstone Project

I developed the Capstone project artifacts shown below. I connected with a real client to help solve an instructional problem. Using the learning design thinking framework, I was able to understand the complex instructional problem which resulted in the creation of the TMA Error Resolution training course.

Other Project Artifacts

Over the course of three years I developed my first training course,

created my first infographic for Learning theories and,

I created my first animated video.

Samples of my work are shown below.

Mastery of Learning Design Competencies

My demonstrated mastery of the eight (8) Learning Design competencies

is described below.

01

Communicate Clearly in writing and speaking

I demonstrated mastery of this competency by preparing my written and verbal material to meet the needs of the target audience.  For example, I created a Personal Branding Statement that I use on my LinkedIn profile to help pique the interest of perspective employers.  It is short, simple and to the point; no more than 3-5 sentences.

03

Use quantitative analysis to solve problems

With the use of analytical tools like Excel Data Analytics and IBM Cognos, I was able to conduct analysis on vast amounts of data to identify recommendations for design improvements.  I demonstrated mastery of this competency by interpreting the results to draw conclusions.  I developed visual representations of the data (e.g. graphs and charts) to help inform decision makers.

05

Demonstrate competency in learning theory and design techniques

I demonstrated mastery of this competency based on my research and analysis of the problem.  Understanding the needs of the learner and why they struggled to resolve timecard errors was important. I used the knowledge gained to help inform the use of learning theories needed (like constructivism) when preparing the instructional material.

07

Demonstrate competency in media production, communications, and dissimentation techniques

To develop the training modules for my capstone project, I used Articulate 360 suite of products to include Storyline, Rise, Review and Reach.  I made use of tutorials and community boards to learn how to develop interactive and adaptive learning modules which  demonstrate my ability to leverage technology to help solve instructional problems.

02

Apply logical processes to formulate clear ideas

I demonstrated mastery of this competency by conducting thorough research on emerging IT trends for 2020.  I followed the data and presented the results using a structured method.  I described the problem, documented the findings, analyzed the data, and presented my conclusions.  I supported my research with substantiated references from multiple sources.

04

Lead, facilitate and collaborate with a diverse team

My 20+ years of Project Management experience played a key role in leading and participating in a diverse group to help accomplish the project objectives. I demonstrated mastery of this competency by leading the development of the team's project management plan and welcomed the diversity and inclusiveness of the team by being an active listener and engaging teammate.

06

Apply analytical tools to solve problems and inform decisions

I demonstrated mastery of this competency by understanding the use of learning analytics in an online environment.  Popular Learning Management Systems like Blackboard Learn and D2L Brightspace provide analytics to help measure student success.  Various stakeholders (like teachers and instructional designers) use the analytics to help improve the online learning experience.

08

Lead learning design projects targeted to specific institutional needs, priorities and strategies

My completion of the Capstone project demonstrates my ability to work with a client to solve real-world problems.  Using the Learning Design Thinking framework, I was able to use data to help solve a complex problem.  I worked closely with the client to develop and test a solution which led to the creation of a training module.

Reflection

I decided to pursue my passion of teaching during the height of COVID-19. As I reflect on this decision, I am glad I made the choice. I get to leverage my Learning Design degree and my PM experience to design learning modules that can help people not only in my community but across the globe.  I am a learner for life and will continue to use my skills to help make others better.
